Abstract

The article explores the relevance of cartography for indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, focusing on the Atlas of peoples, territories and conflicts in Mexico. It examines continuities and ruptures in three historical macro-regions: Mesoamerica, Oasisamerica and Aridoamerica, highlighting the importance of territorial sovereignty and the need for detailed knowledge for its defense. It is argued that cartographies are essential pedagogical tools for understanding political space and its strategies. The Atlas seeks to represent contemporary conflicts over territories in the face of the expansion of global capital, showing the realities of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples in Mexico.
